Sete is a lovely seaside town that can be visited year-round. It has an important fishing port, which gives the town a lively vibe. The many canals and the omnipresence of water have given Sete its nickname 'Venice of Languedoc'.
The water has played an important role ever since the town was built in 1666. The famous Canal du Midi, created by Paul Riquet to connect the Mediterranean sea with the Atlantic, ends in the Étang de Thau. The town of Sete and its maze of canals arose to link the Thau lagoon with the sea.
The arrival of the fishing port also meant the birth of a local tradition. In the middle of the summer, the 'joutes' event takes place, a fun sportive event to watch. Another important event is 'Escale a Sete', a great festival celebrating maritime traditions organised every two years. And every time, the most impressive tall ships of France and other parts of the world arrive in Sete.
With three Wednesday markets, several museums, lots of restaurants, a theatre in the sea, and long sandy beaches, Sete is an interesting destination in the South of France.
