Property Description
This stunning apartment is situated on the second (top) floor of this 17th century former convent. Recently converted into luxury apartments, the building is situated in a quiet area overlooking the river Dordogne, yet just a short stroll to the Quayside area where the hustle and bustle of the town can be enjoyed. A wide choice of restaurants, cafés and shops, there’s plenty to explore. It’s a lovely place to enjoy la belle france.
With both lift and stair access, the apartment is situated on the top floor of an ancient convent ‘Maison les Dames de la Foi’ (Ladies of the Faith also known as Le Couvent des Filles de la Foi), the convent was established in 1686 by Louis XIV at the time of the revocation of the edict of Nantes but was later occupied by a Regiment of Hussars at the time of the Revolution. The building was also the celebrated Protestant college whose pupils included the eminent surgeon Paul Broca, the geographer Eliseé Reclus and Doctor Faure who wrote the acclaimed History of Art.
Restored in recent years, the building was then converted into private apartments. It has a lift and secure entry. The walls of the apartment are ‘colombage’ (half-timbered) and the high ceilings give a great sense of grandeur. The large windows of the main salon overlook the river, the 13th Century Notre-Dame church and the Tour des Templiers.
The kitchen is fully equipped and modern. There are 3 bedrooms. bath/shower room & WC as well as an enclosed terrace that is currently used as a library and artist’s studio. There is also an allocated are a in the building’s wine cellar.
The building has a gothic doorway at street level that leads to a workshop/storage area and a stone circular staircase up to the apartment (although at the moment this is being renovated and the main access is via the lift.)
The central heating is maintained to a high standard and fixtures and fittings included in the sale include kitchen appliances, condensation boiler, chandeliers and lantern ceiling lights.
A local management company is responsible for the overall care of the building and the annual service charge includes building insurance, cleaning of communal areas, lift maintenance, refuse collection and incidental maintenance.
