Corsica Chateaux and Castles
As an island in the Mediterranean Sea, historically Corsica was a strategic point, offering control of a large part of the norther Mediterranean. There are many monuments to conflicts that occurred on the islands during its turbulent history.
Citadelle de Bonifacio: this small citadel is located on the southernmost end of the Corsican island. It has played a major strategic role in the past due to its location. It was besieged on numerous occasions. Nevertheless, it nowadays is one of the most visited places in Corsica thanks to its impressive military architecture.
Citadelle de Calvi: built in the 13th century, stands on a rocky cliff. It is an old fortress with high outer walls protecting the inner houses. The ramparts were often modified by adding small bastions that now elegantly follow the cliff line.
Citadelle de Corte: the old capital of Corsica dating back to the 18th century is still home to the only university of the island. It is an old defensive point, strategically placed in the centre of the island, used to control passage between both ends of the island.
