Best Restaurants in Nice
Wednesday 15 September 2010
With restaurants outnumbering even estate agents in Nice, local expat resident Anthony Collins gives his take on the best places to eat, for all tastes and pockets.
Best Gastronomique
Flaveur - 20, rue Gubernatis
Very original high quality bistro dishes. French cuisine mixed with exotic flavours of the orient. Contemporary ambiance. Alternatively, try:
Le Chantecler - 37, Promenade des Anglais
A Michelin starred restaurant based in the smart Hotel Negresco on the seafront. Fabulous service and food with a price tag to match! A bit stuffy for those who prefer informality, but great for a special occasion.
Best Italian
La Ville de Sienne - 10, Rue Saint Vincent
Based in the Old Town. Great and tasty portions of authentic Italian food in a warm atmosphere. Very popular, so can become busy during peak periods. Alternatively, try:
La Voglia - 2, rue Saint François de Paule
Another splendid if basic Italian restaurant, near the flower market. It is forever busy, despite having many tables. Highly recommended.
Best Indian
Delhi Belhi - 22, Rue de la Barillerie
A wonderful restaurant, with warm atmosphere and terrific, no-nonsense food at a great price. Indian food addicts will love it. A must visit.
Best Pizza
Au Vieux Four - 1, Rue Emmanuel Philibert
Family run restaurant with clay oven cooked pizza. The colours and the taste of real Italian pizza.
Best Snacks
René Socca - 2, Rue Miralheti
Something of an institution in the town, but not compromised because of that. Famous for its 'socca' (Provençal pancakes), as names implies. Cheap but charming.
Best Value
La Route du Miam - 1, rue Molière
Great family atmosphere and delicious and plentiful dishes at this restaurant that specialises in dishes from the South West of France. Seats only around 20 people so check before turning up.
Best Seafood
L'Ane Rouge - 7, Quai des Deux Emmanuel
Delicious bouillabaisse and other seafoods at this restaurant located at the port. Terrace has great view of the port, but traffic rather spoils it. As an alternative try:
Le Grand Café de Turin - 5, Place Garibaldi
A more basic restaurant, but wonderful fresh seafood and an ambiance to match it. Often busy, so service is sometimes poor.
Best Wine Bar
20 Sur Vin - 18 bis rue Biscarra
Great selection of wines with lovely food to accompany it. Can be rather busy, and service is then affected by the crowds.
Best Budget
Le 21 Septembre - Rue Centrale,
Located in the Old Town. Not a vast range of dishes, but what there is is tasty and good value.
